What changed
The U.S. Census Bureau's 28 October advance report put September wholesale inventories at $1,011.5 billion, 0.6% above the revised August level of $1,005.6 billion. Retail inventories were $885.3 billion, up 0.3% from a revised $882.3 billion. The advance goods trade deficit was $134.9 billion, 2.1% above August's $132.1 billion. These figures are seasonally adjusted but are not adjusted for price changes, and the newest inventory estimates are preliminary. Census also says wholesale estimates in this release reflect revisions published on 26 October, based on historical corrections and the 2023 and 2024 Annual Integrated Economic Survey. A separate 15 October release estimated September retail and food-service sales at $745.0 billion, up 0.8% from August and 6.3% from a year earlier, also without a price adjustment. The releases do not show that every category, business or unit volume followed the headline values.
Business implications · analysis
A higher inventory dollar value can mean more units, higher acquisition cost, a different product mix, deliberate buffering against lead times, or unsold stock. It therefore becomes useful only when connected to sales velocity and cash. Operators can use a five-line inventory decision card: value on hand; units and cost or price effect; sales and order pace; age, markdown and return exposure; and funding days and carrying cost. For retailers, compare stock growth with category sales, gross margin and weeks of supply. For wholesalers and manufacturers, add confirmed orders, supplier lead times and customer cancellations. For finance teams, separate stock that protects service from stock that merely absorbs working capital. The goods deficit is another value measure, not a direct explanation for the inventory change. The practical question is which portion of the additional balance can be converted to accepted sales at the planned margin and within the planned cash cycle.
What to watch next
Watch three layers rather than one headline. First, the 4 November goods-and-services trade release can revise or add context to the advance goods figure. Second, finalized wholesale and retail series will show sales alongside inventory and allow inventory-to-sales ratios to be read on a consistent basis. Third, company-level evidence should show unit demand, category mix, aging and financing cost. A healthy case is stock rising with confirmed demand, stable aging and protected margin. A caution case is value rising mainly because costs or prices increased. A stress case is stock growing faster than sales while aging, markdowns, returns and funding days worsen. None of these outcomes can be selected from the advance headline alone. The useful management trigger is not a national inventory number by itself, but a pre-agreed threshold where sales pace, age or cash conversion breaks the plan and prompts a replenishment, pricing or purchasing decision.
